I haven't ever spent a birthday away from home. It actually was kind of nice because there were no expectations for what it would be like. At school my students brought me a birthday cake and they sang to me. We ate the cake in class and did a bit of playing to have fun. Then in the staff room we ate more cake! and the whole staff sang to me. After school we went to all you can eat BBQ, it was delish. Cant say it was a bad birthday!
